Chapter 3

Jonah spent the first half of Monday morning with the Conklins, going over the paperwork required to set up their purchasing the house they’d looked at on Saturday. Afterward, he met with another couple who were house-hunting, taking them around to look at ones which interested them. It was late afternoon by the time they’d seen them all and told him they needed time to make a final decision between the two they liked best.

By then, he was ready to call it a day. He had two appointments on Tuesday to meet with potential sellers who might list their homes with him. He sent each of them emails to remind them when he’d be coming by, getting return emails verifying they would be home at the appointed time.

“The exciting life of a realtor,” he kvetched as he locked his office. He actually loved what he did. It gave him freedom a desk job never could, but there were times when he was more than ready for the day to end. This was one of them.

He pulled into the lot behind the condo complex to find someone was in his parking space. “What idiot this time?” he grumbled. There were designated visitor spots, and two of them were empty. With no choice at the moment, he took one of them. As he got out of the car, he saw Byron drive in and waved.

Jonah unlocked the back door to the building, waiting for Byron to join him. “How was your first day?”

Byron smiled. “Not too bad. The people are friendly. My office is actually larger than a broom closet and the area where I’ll spend most of my time in is well set-up with all the required protections, work tables, computers and—” he laughed softly, “—you have no idea what I’m talking about.”

“I get you’re satisfied you can do what you do with no problem. That’s what counts.”

They walked around to the lobby. As Jonah pushed the button to call the elevator, he impulsively said, “We should celebrate.”

Byron looked at him in surprise. “Celebrate?”

“Your new job.”

“I…Well…”

“There’s a nice restaurant a couple of blocks from here. Close enough to walk to. I mean, if you want to. I for one am not in the mood to cook tonight.”

Byron grinned. “The ulterior motive behind the invitation. Sure, why not? But we go Dutch.”

“Okay. It’s a casual place. Jeans and T-shirts are almost de rigueur.”

“Great.”

The elevator came at that moment. They got off at their respective floors, arranging to meet in the lobby fifteen minutes later.

Now why did I do that? Jonah mused while getting out of his suit, exchanging it for a comfortable pair of jeans and a dark blue T-shirt. “Because I really don’t want to fix my own supper, I suppose. He was there; he’s good company if yesterday was any indication. Yeah, eating alone is not all it’s cracked up to be. Now I don’t have to.”

After combing his hair and checking to be certain he’d transferred his keys and wallet to his jeans pockets, he went down to the lobby.
